Part of the book series: Synthese Library ((SYLI,volume 144))

Abstract

In the course of its evolution the concept of kitsch has undergone considerable transformations. The number and diversity of situations to which this notion is referred have increased. The attributes put forward as criteria of its applicability have changed, assuming today a more theoretical character with reference to such disciplines as psychology or sociology. Kitsch has been shown to play a role in certain mass social phenomena of our age. The nature of kitsch and its function in individual and social life have become the subject of animated controversies. Some look upon kitsch as a dangerous phenomenon which should be counteracted. Others see the use of kitsch to break old habits as a sign of avant-garde social and artistic ideas. All are, however, unanimous in considering the phenomena and the related concept as worthy of interest.
