Abstract
For already 80 years cytological examinations of the Cerebro Spinal Fluid (C.S.F.) are performed to diagnose diseases of the Central Nervous System (CNS). But it is only in the last 15 years that marked improvements in the technique of the preparation of the sediment established it as a reliable diagnostic procedure. In Leyden, like in most of Europe, we use the sedimentation chamber technique introduced by Sayk about 20 years ago. This method is economical, gives excellent conservation of the cells and for one sediment only 1 ml fluid is necessary. May-Grünwald/ Giemsa is preferred by us as the staining of choice.
