Abstract
Although the value of international studies in the field of epidemiology and especially concerning the distribution and causation of cardiovascular diseases is now widely recognized [1], few standardized international comparative studies on blood pressure have been performed. This is the more astonishing since hypertensive disease, in contrast to ischemic disease, is an almost universal problem. Much remains to be learned about the exact geographical distribution of blood pressure and of the factors that are associated with blood pressure in different populations. The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the practical value of using home reading and to perform a comparative cross-sectional survey of the relationship between urinary 24-h sodium and potassium excretion, as a measure of intake, and arterial blood pressure in two different populations.
