Abstract

There are compelling arguments in favor of a male contraceptive agent that acts specifically or preferentially on the epididymis. Several substances are already known to produce adverse effects on epididymal spermatozoa, but their precise mode of action remains unclear. To some extent, this is due to a lack of understanding of how the cells lining the epdidymis deal with substances which gain access to them either from the bloodstream or from the lumen of the duct. Furthermore, the manner in which substances pass in and out of these cells has still to be determined. More fundamental knowledge of the function of the epididymis is, therefore, yet required. But it is a complex organ, as the present outline of some of its morphological features attempts to demonstrate.
