Abstract

The main functions of the mammalian ovary are: (1) the growth and maturation of egg cells (ova), and (2) secretion of two kinds of female sexual hormones; estrogens and gestagens. The first function is a kind of exocrine secretion, where the secretory substance is a living cell that is the ovum, so the ovary is an amphicrine gland exerting exocrine and endocrine functions simultaneously, like the pancreas, liver and testis.
