Abstract

The ejaculatory process may be divided into two phases, the pre-ejaculatory or emission phase and the ejaculatory phase. During emission, secretions from the periurethral glands, the seminal vesicles, and the prostate are deposited in the posterior urethra. In addition, spermatozoa from the ampulla of the vas deferens, the vas itself, and the cauda epididymidis are propelled by peristalsis into the posterior urethra. The emission process is primarily mediated through the sympathetic nervous system. At the time of ejaculation, the bladder neck, or so- called internal sphincter, closes. Both emission and closure of the bladder neck can be prevented by alpha-adrenergic blocking agents (Shishito and Kimura 1973).
