Abstract
The scientific, technical and logistical problems, associated with development of an international monitoring programme of biological sampling and specimen banking are generally recognized as being exceedingly profound and complex. The systems ecologists, the toxicologists, the physiologists, the pathologists, molecular biologists, analytical chemists and other participating scientific disciplines all have differing perspectives to bring to bear. Thus, the essential multidisciplinary nature of environmental monitoring and specimen banking will require maximum understanding, considerable forbearance and some compromise among contributing disciplines.
