Abstract

A ventilator is a piece of equipment whose function is to move gas in and out of the lungs. The intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) that its use entails is non-physiological and can disturb normal circulatory dynamics, the main disturbance being a decrease in venous return to the heart during inspiration (p. 152). Table 21.1 illustrates the differences in intrapleural pressure associated with both normal spontaneous and artificial ventilation.
