Abstract
General approach to emergency situations
Organs such as the heart and brain are irreversibly damaged by a short period of absent circulation or oxygenation. Therefore, priorities are necessary in the treatment of life-threatening situations such as severe barbiturate poisoning where urgent general measures for circulatory and respiratory support may enable a patient to survive long enough for detoxication and excretion of the poison, and therefore for recovery to take place. There are three stages in the treatment of life-threatening conditions.
