Central vasopressin function in affective illness

  • Chapter
Hormones and the Brain

Abstract

This paper reports preliminary findings which show that in drug-free manic-depressive patients, both the cerebrospinal fluid levels of arginine vasopressin (AVP) and the plasma AVP response to hypertonic saline are reduced in depression compared with mania. When depressed patients were given sustained administration of 1-deamino-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP), a synthetic analogue of AVP. some showed enhancements of cognitive function and amelioration of depressive symptomatology. These findings are compatible with an hypothesis of relatively diminished AVP function in depression compared with mania.
