Abstract
The problem of rotating emission disks (or rings) in close binary systems is discussed from a simple hydrodynamic point of view for the inviscid gas flow with the aid of the Roche coordinates. Assuming, as a sufficient approximation, that the rotating gas flows around one component in a close binary system move along zero- velocity curves in the orbital plane, a certain simple relation can be deduced between the flow velocity and the outward density gradient. By regarding the observed rotational velocity of the emission disk as corresponding to the velocity of the stream of maximum density in the flows, we can easily evaluate, with the relation, the dimension of the rotating disk from the velocity. Application is made to emission disks in Algol-type close binaries and also to accretion disks in cataclysmic variables.
