The Dynamical Effects of Hypersonic Stellar Winds on Interstellar Gas

Early type stars have energetic winds which impinge hypersonically on interstellar gas. We review this interaction with particular emphasis on the resulting dynamical effects. The basic flow pattern and physical state of the gas are first briefly discussed and the results then applied to the competition between a wind driven shell and the ionization front produced by the stellar radiation field. We then examine a variety of topics: the dynamical structure of galactic and extragalactic HII regions, the production and maintenance of density fluctuations within nebulae, and the formation of large scale loop structures in the plane of the galaxy. The emphasis throughout the review is on simple semi-qualitative models of various wind related phenomena.
