Abstract

There is evidence of both short and long term variations in the climate of the Alps, followed by the mass balance of glaciers, the movement of the front and the elevation of the equilibrium line.

After a short discussion on glacier terminology and on the energy balance of a glaciated surface, some methods of glaciers study are reviewed, noting their inherent advantages and draw-backs.

Some results of such methods are given, and an example of comparison with climatic conditions is made, with reference to the Marmolada Glacier in the Italian eastern Alps.
