Abstract

This discussion will be highly circumscribed in a few respects. First, I shall limit my attention to those compact galactic X-ray sources whose X-ray luminosities are considerably in excess of the solar luminosity, and in particular I shall exclude from my discussion the weak X-ray emission that has been detected from many apparently isolated stars (Linsky 1980; Vaiana 1980). I shall also exclude any detailed discussion of individual peculiar objects and shall instead concentrate on the general trends among the majority of the bright galactic sources.
