Abstract

Control systems for the prevention of trichostrongylosis in calves in Utrecht are based mainly on avoiding the over-wintered larval infections on the grass and the mid-summer increase of infective larvae on the pasture. The systems consist mainly of providing advice about the use and change of pastures and the use of anthelmintic treatments.

The correct application of preventive programmes is hampered, however, many times by various factors such as unpredictable dry weather, farm management systems, and the unwillingness of some farmers to cooperate.
