Some Reflections and Data about Useful Plant Types in Vicia faba Breeding

Abstract

Several mutant derivatives of cv. Kornberger Kleinkörnige (Vicia fata spp. minor) selected for reduced apical dominance were analysed in respect of yield components and their interrelations. A marked reduction in height compared with the original indeterminate variety was associated with a high number of pod bearing stems and increased numbers of podbearing nodes and pods per plant. Numbers of seeds per pod were reduced but average seed weight remained unchanged. The high number of pod bearing nodes may provide a compensating mechanism to balance differences in population density. Compensation between the various yield components and the consequences of selection for high and low expression for any given component are presented in graphs.

Changed plant architecture and responses in yield components may provide an additional insight into biotype performance.
