Abstract

M-mode echocardiography has been useful for evaluating the dimensions of various cardiac chambers and for assessing left ventricular function. However, the ability of M-mode echocardiography to evaluate cardiac size and function is limited by the narrow field which can be viewed at any given time. Because of its ability to visualize larger areas of the heart, two-dimensional echocardiography has recently been used to assess cardiac size and function. Quantitative assessment of the heart by two-dimensional echocardiography has been especially useful in the evaluation of children with congenital heart disease.
