Quantification from Two-Dimensional Echocardiographic Images

An interactive image-processing computer system was used to extract quantitative information from two-dimensional echocardiographic images. Two short-axis views and three long-axis views were used to obtain an optimal overall representation of the left ventricle. Wall thickening was studied from the short-axis views and wall motion was studied from both short-axis and long-axis views. They were described using a radial coordinate system with a fixed origin. Average amplitudes for motion and thickening were obtained from a group of clinically normal subjects and were displayed graphically, showing the amplitudes in mm at each angle between 0° and 360°. The inter-observer variabilities for these measurements at each angle are displayed in similar graphs. The inter-observer variability in measuring cross-sectional surface area and long-axis length, which are used in volume calculations, was assessed by repeating measurements under equal or different conditions.
