Abstract
Instillation of hypertonic saline (20% NaCl) into the amniotic sac was one of the first methods used in this country to perform legal abortion by amnioinfusion. Even today, it probably is the most widely used method for late second-trimester abortions. When performed by experienced physicians, amnioinfusion with hypertonic saline is an effective method for second-trimester abortion, with live births occurring only rarely.
