Abstract
With only a few exceptions, conditions giving rise to diffuse pulmonary alveolar fibrosis remain ill understood from the aetiological point of view. This has given rise to a great deal of confusion in the literature and numerous titles for the condition have been designed to try to embrace all of the variations. Regretfully, the inventors of these titles have not always used their terms precisely, thus perpetuating the confusion. Here diffuse pulmonary alveolar fibrosis means widespread fibrosis in that part of the lung beyond the terminal bronchioles which is concerned with gas exchange. Table 3 outlines the broad groups defined either aetiologically or histopathologically, and is included to serve only as a guide to conditions that may have to be considered in differential diagnosis. It will also be seen that several of the diseases mentioned have already been considered.
