Abstract
It appears difficult to estimate the actual total area of salt-affected soils throughout the world. A recent survey indicated that the irrigated area of 103 countries totaled 203 million hectares (Anonymous, 1970). In general it can be concluded that salinity problems are found in all countries having areas where arid and semi-arid climates exist. The great majority of these areas appear to have been affected by excess soluble salts for thousands of years, but there is a very large area of land which has become saline within the period of recorded history. Secondary salinity is a great environmental problem faced by man today.
