Book cover Contributions to the ecology of halophytes

Part of the book series: Tasks for vegetation science ((TAVS,volume 2))

Abstract

Although the oldest reference to halophytes dates back to 1563, when Dodoens described Plantago maritima for the first time (cf. Uphof, 1941), the term ‘halophyte’ was introduced much later by Pallas, a Russian botanist in 1803 (cf. Strogonov, 1973). Subsequent literature has been discussed periodically in many reviews and books (Uphof, 1941; Adriani, 1958; Chapman, 1960; Waisel, 1972; Reimold and Queen, 1974; Poljakoff-Mayber and Gale, 1975; Flowers, 1975; Flowers et al., 1977; Ungar, 1978). Strogonov (1964, 1973) has contributed two excellent reviews of the work done in the U.S.S.R. Navalkar (1973) and Joshi (1976) discussed the results of Indian workers mainly on msangroves. Moreover, recent information on halophytes as well as on mangroves has been discussed fully in other chapters of this book. Only additional data on Indian halophytes will therefore be discussed in the following pages.
