Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy has predicted that residential photovoltaic applications will become cost-competitive with conventional utility-grid power during the 1980’s — perhaps as early as 1986 in some regions of the country. This paper will present the results of our early work in the design, engineering and construction of photovoltaic residences, including the design trade-offs involved in the integration of PV systems with passive solar architecture, using our first lived-in PV residences as case studies.
