Abstract

We shall be concerned in this lecture with the discontinuous recrystallization mechanisms by which pure metals and alloys repair the structural damage caused by mechanical deformation. For comprehensive reviews of the existing body of experimental observations, the theories proposed, and discussions of the open issues, the reader is refferred to the existing literature.’1, 2 The recrystallization process involves the nucleation and growth of new crystals in a material with a high density of defects. Hence, attention has to be focussed primarily on two problems: (i) the formation of the new crystals and (ii) the growth process of the new crystals.
