Oceanic Tides and the Rotation of the Earth

Abstract

Periodic effects of oceanic tides are near to the limits of modern observational techniques. The largest effects are due to the secular transfer of angular momentum and energy between the Earth’s rotation and the lunar orbit. This interaction is mediated by oceanic tides. Because of the very complex resonance structure of the oceans, the changes due to continental drift give rise to considerable variations of the torque not only within the 100 million time scale but even within 1–10 million years. These variations are about factors 2 or 3; if they appear in the sense of diminishing torques, they might settle the enigma of a narrow Earth-Moon-system at a time not far enough in the past.
