Abstract
Details are given of the current state of development of standards for DES applications5 both in national and international contexts. Standards are needed both for modes of operation and for secure device environment. The incorporation of an encryption function as an enhancement of various communication protocols is discussed. A range of implementations of the DES is described. Lastly, the subject of key management is developed further.
