Uprooting and Surviving — An Overview

Uprooting and Surviving

Part of the book series: Priority Issues in Mental Health ((PIMH,volume 2))

Abstract

People move for many different reasons. Human migration has been provoked by such diverse factors as war, natural calamities, industrialization and urbanization, persecution and discrimination, economic insecurity, professional ambition, and in the case of some individuals, just plain restlessness. In the Prologue, Pfister-Ammende presents a conceptual framework for classifying various types of migration and mobility. This is a very useful contribution because the typology serves, among other things, to differentiate mobility and change which are a normal part of human development or which serve a positive human interest, from other types of mobility which create a high risk for the health and well-being of the people involved.
