Abstract
The cryostorage of human semen has developed during recent years mainly for two reasons:
-
1)
the convenience of cryostored semen in AID
-
2)
the facility for autoconservation before vasectomy or either elective or therapeutic treatment leading to sterility.
Even if the primary indication does not require long-term storage, unlike cases of autoconservation in situations where sterilizing treatments are often administered to young men it would be desirable to be able to guarantee storage for at least 10 years. This poses the problem of the long- term maintenance of the fertilizing ability of spermatozoa, an aspect which has not previously been studied. In addition, the available results concerning post-thaw motility are contradictory (1, 2) We have therefore investigated the motility and fertilizing ability of donor semen after periods of 5–8 years’ storage.
