Abstract

Antibodies against the H-Y antigen which is coded for or controlled by a gene on the Y-chromosome (1–4), have been produced since 1971 (5). In the presence of H-Y antigen, the gonad is induced to form a testis, while in its absence ovarian differentiation occurs. In a sperm population heterogenous for X or Y-chromosomes, H-Y antigen should be present on the surface of only those cells which carry Y-chromosome-if haploid expression exists. Specific antibodies directed against the H-Y antigen should selectively kill those cells carrying the corresponding antigen. The relatively minor shift in the sex ratio of progeny in mice inseminated with spermatozoa treated with H-Y antiserum (6), indicated only relatively small quantitative differences in H-Y distribution between the two types of spermatozoa. It may be that the sperm membrane has been conserved from the diploid state (6) or that there have been contributions by Sertoli cells (7).
