Abstract

It is well known that the reactions of hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide over transition metals involve a risk for the formation of bulk carbon (1,2). It is also well established that the carbon normally grows in a whisker-like structure with metal crystal on the top of the whisker. The mechanism is discussed elsewhere at this course (3). One important aspect of the mechanism is that the growth rate is independent of time, meaning that large amounts of carbon can accumulate. This is in contrast to the carbon formation in catalytic cracking where the carbon deactivates the active site forming the carbon.
