Abstract

It must have been Winston Churchill who said that an audience’s attention was best, gained by a speaker who used simple Anglo-Saxon words, preferably “visual” ones with few syllables - and who avoided the “soft” words, the abstract (and often long) ones containing the sounds “sh” and “ch” (like “allocation”, “depreciation”, “discretionary”, “differential”, “inflationary” and “discrimination”).1
