Abstract
This paper considers certain aspects of the changing role of major commercial banks in the financial systems of western developed countries. In particular it considers how the economic, regulatory and other key influences on the banking environment may be expected to affect the competitive position that these major banks occupy vis-à-vis other banks and non-bank financial institutions.
