Human Cell Line (SKG-1) Derived from Epidermoid Cancer of the Cervix

  • Chapter
Carcinoma of the Cervix

Part of the book series: Developments in Obstetrics and Gynecology ((DIOG,volume 6))

Abstract

The HeLa cell line is derived from biopsy specimens of a patient with advanced uterine cervical cancer (Gey et al. 1952). Based on histological and autopsy findings, this cancer was initially identified as anaplastic epidermoid cancer (Leighton 1957). However, the origin of the HeLa cells was reappraised (Jones et al. 1971) and it was suggested that it was adenocarcinomatous with obvious glandular elements. Therefore, the establishment of a cell line derived from epidermoid cancer of the uterine cervix became desirable.
