Abstract

Contrast echocardiographic injections, performed through surgically positioned central venous and left atrial lines, have been shown to be valuable in detecting and localizing right-to-left and left-to-right intracardiac shunting respectively, during the early postoperative period. When applied serially over the first few days after surgery, this technique differentiates flow through surgical patches from shunting across true residual defects [1].
