Abstract
Although echocardiography has been found to be very useful for evaluating valvular and congenital heart disease, its use for quantitating the amount of ischemic myocardium has not been as well documented. Echocardiography has been limited for this purpose because of two major factors. First, until recently ultrasonic examination of the heart was limited to the M-mode approach where a single beam provided limited information concerning movement of only the septum and posterior walls. Second, image quality is frequently impaired in patients with ischemic heart disease due to age, chest wall configuration, accompanying lung disease, and other ill-defined factors.
