Part of the book series: Developments in Hydrobiology ((DIHY,volume 17))

Abstract

The utilization of periphyton activity for the removal of surplus nutrients from enriched influents in drinking water reservoirs has been examined as a possible method of waterworks pre-treatment. By means of batch laboratory, as well as continuous-flow in situ model experiments, a marked uptake of nitrate and phosphate by the periphyton biofilm has been demonstrated. The results of model experiments are being tested in a pilot scale ‘bioeliminator’ with respect to the demands of engineering waterworks practice.
