Abstract

The fragmentation of a collapsing uniform protogalactic cloud of metal-poor gas is investigated. It is shown that thermal instability is able to induce the fragmentation at an early, diffuse stage of the cloud. The mass scales associated with this non-gravitational instability depend on metallicity and can lead to the formation of a first generation of massive Pop.II stars which seems to be required by the observational data on halo subdwarfs.
