Timing of Orogenic Events in the U.S. Appalachians

Abstract

In the New England Appalachians, where the cover sequences are reasonably complete and where many plutons exist, time brackets for deformational features are well established. Defor-mational events occur over a short duration of time and appear as distinct events. These events are more-or-less synchronous across the orogen. To the south in the Middle and Southern Appalachians, where the cover sequences to a considerable extent have been removed by erosion, deformations are less well bracketed in time, and ambiquity exists over large tracts as to the age of the deformational features observed in the rocks. These difficulties inhibit any attempt to test synchroniety along the orogen.

Thermal effects, manifest by plutons and metamorphism, correlate with the deformations, but the thermal effects are longer lived than the deformational effects.

The Appalachian orogen is composite, having been constructed over a period of ∼350 my. The effects of these events are not uniformly distributed over the fold-thrust belt.
