Abstract
Metamorphic variations in the Scandinavian Caledonides are related to the general constitution of the orogen as a sequence of nappes emplaced upon the Baltic foreland. In the central and eastern belts, the present pattern of regional metamorphism largely coincides with the nappe pattern, and multiply metamorphosed, high-grade units of Precambrian or Caledonian age are locally juxtaposed with low-grade units. The basement below the nappes has been increasingly involved in the Caledonian orogeny northwestwards, where inclusions of ecrlogite in the gneisses indicate pressures related to a doubling of the crust.
The metamorphism probably took place during various climactic events from the Late Precambrian to Upper Devonian time. The most important were related to subduction/ocean closure during the Ordovician to Cambrian and continental collision in the Late Silurian.
