Abstract
HI surveys of our own galaxy have reached a high level of completeness at a relatively high resolution, both spatially and in velocity. But still many questions about the spiral structure of our galaxy, the presence (or not) of a bar, the z-distribution of material, and the detailed structure of its interstellar medium remain unanswered. Even the recent CO surveys although promising and important, have not yet resulted in a major breakthrough, the principal problem being our unfavourable location buried within the system.
