Abstract

The flux of high energy γ-rays (E≳50 Mev) from the Galactic plane may be used to place limits on the density of H2 in the Galaxy. Here the density of H2 in the molecular ring (R = 6 kpc) is examined. It is shown that the upper limit on the surface density of H2 is slightly less than estimates based on CO observations and that the most likely value is much less (about 3.5 M⊙pc−2).
