Abstract
Magnetospheres are known to be associated with the planets Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Venus (in the case of Venus and possibly Mars as well, one has a magnetosphere-like system rather than a true magnetosphere); they are also attributed to various astrophysical objects such as neutron stars, and magnetosphere-like systems have been suggested for comets. All these systems exhibit a considerable variety in sizes, plasma sources, and important physical effects. The plasma flow within a magnetosphere tends toward corotation with the central object, unless limited by one of several possible effects, related to finite ionospheric conductivity, flow of the external medium, or breakdown of radial stress balance, each of which becomes important beyond a particular characteristic distance.
