Abstract

AWRE Aldermaston operates a small NR team on the HERALD 5MW reactor. Most of the work is done for the UK Ministry of Defence but some work is undertaken for outside agencies.

NR with either thermal or cold neutrons is used for ordnance, reactor and aircraft items. Dynamic neutron radiography of an internal combustion engine has been demonstrated.

New techniques are incorporated as required. Under development are an anti-scatter grid for enhanced detection of small density differences and a two axis tilt table for enhanced crack detection.

Alternative sources have been investigated and a D-T neutron source is used routinely for NR.
