Abstract

The tools available for assisting the Systems Analyst/Designer in his/her work have changed very little in the past 30 years. Certainly, the productivity gains from tools and techniques are small relative to improvements in hardware and software. Productivity gains from the systems analyst/designer tools can’t compare with productivity gains from hardware and systems software. Hardware has been reduced in size and price, performance and reliability has improved greatly (Figure 1). The improvements in hardware are dramatic and has led to greater expectations by the user. Systems software has also improved tremendously from the primitive systems of the 50’s. Programming Languages, operating systems and Data Base Management Systems have proven to be powerful tools for building systems. For example, assemblers and compilers have made the job of the programmer much easier. Operating systems have evolved from largely a manual effort to a completely automated system. Building information systems has evolved to the point where the next step is to support the systems analyst in the analysis and design process.
