Abstract

One of the changes which has taken place in our society is that reading now plays an increasingly important part. Books, magazines, newspapers, circulars, checks and television subtitles are all based on the assumption that nearly everyone can read. And yet there are many people who have difficulty in reading. These people thus have an obvious handicap, which may have a number of causes. These include, for example, poor eyesight or a general lack of mental0 development. However, there are also cases of children who have difficulty in reading without there being any apparent cause. They have good eyes, a good intellect, there is nothing wrong socially or emotionally, but still they cannot properly learn how to read. This phenomenon is known by a number of names, such as word blindness or developmental dyslexia.
