Abstract
Chemical characteristics of sludges are necessary in assessing the effect of ultimate sludge disposition in the environment; in considering alternatives for possible reuse; and in evaluating the applicability of sludge treatment processes. Currently, the chemical nature of sludges has been well characterized with respect to reuse as a fertilizer but ill-defined with respect to characterization for possible impact as a hazards waste. This situation exists because of the multitude of sludge types and the many analytical techniques which have been employed on these sludges.
