Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a brief review of image processing, as employed in the field of medical imaging, and to include a discussion of the problems of display including that of 3-dimensional objects. The improvements in technology that have occured in the areas of CT, ultrasound (US) and single photon and positron emission CT, (SPECT and PECT), have resulted in a considerable expansion of the number and complexity of medical images, and the advent of other imaging procedures (NMR, digital radiology etc) is likely to further this trend. While medical images used to be exclusively two dimensional, the appearance of 3-D data has now become common, although the third dimension can be in space, or time, or even some other derived parameter (such as tissue character).
