Abstract
Although there is general agreement on the nature of the environmental impacts associated with highway design, construction and maintenance, the way and the extent to which those impacts are assessed vary in differing national contexts. The following is based on a comparison of EIA procedures for highway planning in the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany.
