Abstract
Since pulsed ultrasound was first introduced to examine the heart in the 1950s, echocardiography plays a significant role in the diagnosis and management of patients, especially those with suspected valvular heart disease. In this chapter it is described how in our opinion echocardiography has to be applied in daily practice in patients with different kinds of mitral valve disease in order to make the diagnosis, to assess the severity of the lesion and how to manage these patients.
