Summary
Laws and regulations have existed in the chemical industry for over 100 years as have professional organisations to look after the protection of workers against hazards. The aim has always been the reliable prevention of hazards working within objectives that have commitment from all levels in a company. This paper discusses monitoring from the standpoint of regular updating as new analytical techniques emerge. It states industry’s position regarding cancer prevention programmes now and in the future and makes proposals for the development of a code of good monitoring practice. It concludes with a request for a greater convergence between countries, and between industry and authorities.
